100% Renewable Kootenays

Extreme weather events are impacting resident health and safety, our local economies, and our quality of life.

I call on my municipality to transition to 100% renewable energy by 2050, and to dedicate staff and resources to create a transition path and implement this plan.

We need the West Kootenays to phase-out fossil fuels and transition to 100% renewable energy in all sectors, including transportation, electricity, and heating & cooling in buildings, no later than 2050 so we can do our fair share to prevent the worst climate impacts of carbon pollution, like wildfires, droughts, floods, and landslides, while creating good, green jobs for local people.

Why is this important?

Municipalities own most of the built infrastructure in Canada, and have control over roughly half of Canada’s annual greenhouse gas emissions. When we act together, we have the power to create a healthy, prosperous future that includes support for low-income people, providing justice and reconciliation for Indigenous Peoples, and retraining workers from the fossil fuel industry to green jobs.

If the whole West Kootenay region commits to transition to 100% renewable energy no later than 2050 then it would be the largest geographic area in North America to lead on clean energy.
